The top six scorers in league games are freshmen or sophomores, led by Arizona's Jerryd Bayless (22.7) and Cal's Ryan Anderson (21.4).
The WAC
Last weekend's Bracket Buster was a bust for the league, which went 3-6 in the series. Boise State was ambushed at home by Siena, 93-70, and bell cow Nevada was routed on the road at Southern Illinois, 74-49.
Five count
No Pac-10 team has been an at-large entry into the NCAA tournament with as little as a .500 league record, while elsewhere, there have been 29 instances of at-large teams making it with a sub-.500 conference mark, including 12 by the ACC and five by the Big Ten. The last five to do it:
1. Arkansas, 2007: 21-13 (7-9)
2. North Carolina St., 2005: 19-13 (7-9)
3. Iowa, 2005: 21-11 (7-9)
4. Alabama, 2003: 17-11 (7-9)
5. Penn State, 2001: 19-11 (7-9)
Triple shot
Three takes on college-basketball happenings:
Kentucky, once 7-9 this season, has a shot at making another NCAA tournament. The Wildcats are 16-10 and their RPI has climbed to a respectable 65.
Fox TV scheduling is sometimes a head-scratcher. Sunday, Stanford and California tipped off at 6 p.m. — just after the Academy Awards show began.
Hasn't Nike's quest to put Oregon in cutting-edge uniforms gone too far? The latest black ensemble the Ducks unveiled in Los Angeles last week featured names on the back that were unintelligible.
